Reviews Across the Genre Line.
Categories.

This page is mainly here to explain the various categories of posts.  Reading through the posts themselves will give you an idea of what’s happening, but if you want a quick guide to it, here’s the scoop:

Show Review

Just what it sounds like.  I go to a lot of shows, and will try to review every band I get out to see.  I think that live performances tell a lot about an artist’s work ethic and relationship with her or his fans.  I’ll do what I can to cover all interesting aspects.

Album Review

Again, pretty self-explanatory.  I’ll try to review new releases, but I’m going to categorize anything released in the previous twelve months of the posting date as an album review, because I don’t always have access to brand new material.  I do what I can, though.

All-Encompassing

Somewhere in the middle of going to shows, trying to meet the artists, being a campus DJ, and always trying to keep on top of whatever scene I’m feeling at the moment, I end up getting to know musicians on a personal basis, or I end up finding bands, albums, and shows all at the same time.  Instead of making two or three different posts or trying to decide what aspect of something I want to highlight, I’ll occasionally be doing all-encompassing reviews: a band, an album, and a show, or some mixture of the three.  Again, I think that personality affects the way music is received, which affects how a stage performance can look to two different people, which can. . .and so forth.  So these will happen infrequently, but they will.

Empty Cabinet

Sometimes nothing new will be on my radar, but maybe I’ll be revisiting a mid-90’s grunge album and I’ll want to talk about that — so I’ll post an Empty Cabinet segment.  I’ll post about older material in terms of my relationship to it, nostalgic value, and/or things like that.  I didn’t start listening to music today, after all.

Soapbox

Anyone can post on the Internet, and someday I feel like an Anyone.  These will be infrequent, but if I have something to sound off on ( ska music, the latest presidential address, college finances ), they might pop up.  As I’ve explained, I’d like people to know where these reviews are coming from, so I’d like to reveal a bit of where I stand on general topics.
